When you’re having your first baby, all the labor advice out there can feel like too much. Most of it says the same things. And honestly, a lot of it doesn’t help when you’re actually in labor.
By your third trimester, you’ve probably read tons of articles. They talk about pelvic exercises, breathing, water births, and what to pack. Your head might be spinning from all the advice.
That’s totally normal!
During my pregnancy, I found some really good labor tips. They were different from the usual stuff you read everywhere. This advice helped me feel so much better. It took away a lot of my worry.

1) Keep Your Hands Relaxed During Contractions
This tip changed everything for me. When your hands are loose, it means your whole body isn’t tense. And when you’re trying to have a baby, staying relaxed is super important.
Here’s something cool: your body knows how to deliver your baby. Even if you were sleeping, your body could do it. This made me feel so much better about the whole thing.
It sounds too simple to work. And when labor gets intense, it’s hard to remember. But during my second birth, I tried it. I was squeezing my husband’s hand really tight. Then I told myself: “Let your hands go loose.”
I stopped squeezing and relaxed my hands. Then I pushed. That was the push my baby came out on! It really worked.

2) Don’t Believe Everything About Birth Positions
Just because something is popular doesn’t mean it’s right for you. Some trendy positions (like squatting while pushing) might not be the best choice.
I felt most comfortable pushing on my back. I had read about this ahead of time. So I didn’t feel bad about choosing what felt right for me.
I also learned about different ways to prepare your body for birth. I talked to my doctor about it before delivery. Those talks made my birth experience much better. I chose to keep things simple, and that worked great for me.
3) Learn How to Push the Right Way
“Pushing” means something specific. It’s not just screaming and bearing down.
Think about blowing out a candle really hard. That’s closer to what pushing should feel like. You need to relax your pelvic muscles while you do it.
The muscles you use for pushing are different than you might think. Learning this before labor starts makes everything less scary.
4) Make Low Sounds, Not High Ones
High-pitched screaming makes your body tense up. Low, deep sounds do the opposite. They help you stay relaxed.
Staying relaxed also makes the “ring of fire” feeling less intense. That’s when the baby’s head comes out.
This simple change in how you use your voice can make a big difference.
5) Take a Good Birth Class
Learning about birth is really important. Online classes make it easy to learn from home. A good class will answer your questions and calm your fears.
I didn’t take a class with my first baby. When my water broke, I had no idea what to do. Should I go to the hospital right away? Wait for contractions? I was so confused.
Don’t skip this step. It really helps.
